The oldest written language still in existence today is Greek which is the original language of the New Testament. Hebrew is the original language of the Old Testament. (*Mycenaean Greek is older than Hebrew)
Portions of the Bible were first translated from Greek into Latin as early as 100 AD. Latin was the Lingua Franca of the vast Roman Empire stretching across Europe.
The various parchments, scrolls and letters known as ‘Holy scriptures’ were first compiled together around 350 AD to form the complete Holy Bible as we know it today. This was done in Rome under the strict supervision of St Jerome. Thanks to the missionaries of SIL (Summer institute of Linguistics) and Wycliffe Bible Translators, remote tribes in Papua New Guinea can hear the Bible in their own language. Some of these languages are only spoken by a few hundred people and have no orthography (writing system) so audio or verbal scripture reading is necessary.
